    This is the second of a two-volume catalogue raisonn of the work of Jacques Lipchitz, one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century. Volume One: The Paris Years 1910-1940 was published by Thames and Hudson in 1996. Volume Two documents and illustrates all the known sculptures that Lipchitz created during the second half of his long and prolific career, from his arrival in New York on June 13, 1941, until his death on Capri on May 27, 1973. Lipchitz's reputation as one of the masters of modern sculpture has long been based on the great Cubist carvings and bronzes of 1915-25 and on the experimental "transparents" of 1925-30. Although the sculpture from the American years has been widely exhibited, little serious critical attention has been paid to the iconography, the stylistic diversity, the spontaneity and boldness, and the technical innovations of this work. The 403 sculptures cataloged in Volume Two will provide, for the first time, the opportunity to reassess Lipchitz's late work. During the American years commissions occupied more and more of Lipchitz's time and energy. The preparatory studies for each work have been catalogued with the definitive bronze, allowing us to follow the evolution of the projects, from maquettes to monumental sculpture. In contrast to the large scale, public commissions, Lipchitz created the thematic "series" sculptures, which are a unique feature from the second half of his working life.     Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973) is recognised as the most significant Cubist sculptor of the 20th century. It was Lipchitz who embraced the movement's language and consistently translated its ideologies into sculptural forms. A Jewish immigrant, Lipchitz arrived in Paris in 1909 where he established himself as one of the capital's most successful avant-garde artists. The threat of Hitler's troops prompted Lipchitz to move to America in 1941, where he stayed until his death in 1973, successfully rebuilt his career and became recognised as the grand old man of Cubism. Little has been written on Lipchitz's career as a whole, but this work, published to accompany a gift of 40 sculptures to the Courtauld Gallery, London, sets out to redress this. Cathy Putz presents a thorough analysis of the sculptor's career illustrated with 80 colour images and numerous archival photographs, some of which have never been seen before....

    Utilizing works from museums across North America, Lipchitz and the Avant-Garde traces the path of the pioneering sculptor Jacques Lipchitz from his birthplace in Lithuania to his early work in Paris before World War I, where he was associated with the Parisian avant-garde and applied cubist principles to three-dimensional artwork. By breaking the volume and using different planes, Lipchitz created works that were a new force in the history of sculpture. His innovation of the transparents style in sculpture during the late 1920s was groundbreaking and was copied by many, including Picasso. At the outbreak of World War II the Jewish artist fled to New York, where he worked on increasingly monumental sculptures until his death in 1973.

This substantive catalog contains new essays by internationally renowned scholars and translated articles by contemporaries Ramón Gómez de la Serna and Joaquin Torres-García that have not appeared in English before....
