Reviews :

Anish Kapoor is one of a highly inventive generation of sculptors who emerged in London in the early 1980s. Since then he has created a remarkable body of work that blends a modernist sense of pure materiality with a fascination for the manipulation of form and the perception of space. This book—the first major American publication on Kapoor's work—surveys his work since 1979, with a focus on sculptures and installations made since the early 1990s. With more than ninety color images of these ambitious and complex works, three original essays, an extended interview with Kapoor, and selections from his sketchbooks, this book confirms Anish Kapoor's place as one of the most remarkable sculptors working today.

Kapoor's work has evolved into an abstract and perceptually complex elaboration of the sculptural object as at once monumental and evanescent, physical and ethereal—as in his famous Cloud Gate (2004) in Chicago's Millennium Park. The works in Anish Kapoor include such striking works as Past, Present, Future (2006), 1000 Names (1979-1980) and When I Am Pregnant (1992). This book, which accompanies an exhibition at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art, offers American readers a long-overdue opportunity to consider the extraordinary clarity, subtlety, and power of Kapoor's art.

Includes an interview with the artist by Nicholas Baume.

Reviews :

This new book on the art of world-renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor examines his latest sculpture in the context of his work as a whole.

Since the 1970s Anish Kapoor has been creating sculptures and installations from a variety of materials such as wood, stone, metal, wax, and resin. His use of bright pigments and archetypal forms enables his audience to appreciate these works on a variety of levels. This volume presents Kapoor s sculptures from the last thirty years, focusing specifically on his recent installation, Svayambh ( self-creation in Sanskrit), in which a giant block of red Vaseline moves imperceptibly between rooms in the gallery, leaving behind traces of color on the walls. The text analyzes in depth many of Kapoor s major works and places them in their historical and philosophical context, offering new ways of understanding both Kapoor s work and contemporary sculpture....

Anish Kapoor Whiteout
Authors: Anthony Vidler. Anish Kapoor.
Paperback, 80 pages
Publisher: Charta
Publication Date: 2004-09-02

Reviews :

Intimate yet grand, the immediacy of Anish Kapoor's large-scale sculptural works is often said to evoke the sublime. His signature use of vibrant color, dynamic material, and organic forms combine to dominate, astonish, and redefine the relationship between object and viewer, sculpture and space. For Kapoor, it is the act of viewing, rather than the material, that consummates the work. In the new body of work presented here, Kapoor further explores the illusions of materials and surfaces, articulating his established dialogue between form and void, dynamic and static. A new large-scale stainless steel piece is accompanied by other new works that expand upon the familiar while introducing new methods of figuration. Essay by Anthony Vidler.

Anish Kapoor
Authors: Anish Kapoor.
Hardcover, 120 pages
Publisher: Guggenheim Museum
Publication Date: 2008-11-01

Reviews :

Since the early 1980s, Anish Kapoor's investigations into objecthood, materiality and gravity have explored the concept of the void, or "objects becoming space." His sculptures, installations and public art test the phenomenology of space and have historically been characterized by intensely tactile or reflective materials--like colored pigments, wax, fiberglass, polished stainless steel and PVC--that resist any narrative reading. This volume documents Kapoor's 2008 commission for the Deutsche Guggenheim, which travels to New York in 2009. Conceived as an intervention in the galleries that prevents any one complete viewing or experience of the work, and fabricated of Cor-Ten steel with industrial hinges and flanges exposed, the work tests the boundaries between sculpture and painting. It is considered in this volume through the lenses of philosophy, structural analysis and postcolonial and architectural theory. In addition to ample color reproductions of the work itself, this volume includes preparatory sketches and architectural renderings....

Reviews :

This new volume presents Anish Kapoor's recent landmark installation Taratantara, a site-specific work set in a flourmill in northeastern England, on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The work consists of a red membrane inserted into the mill's open wall--a massive, sublime object that at a distance appears flat and extradimensional, but upon a closer look reveals its concavity and its organic materiality. It is a work that plays with our perceptions, inspiring awe and a sense of transcendence. The accompanying book documents the process of creating the installation, from its earliest stages to its dismantling, along with essays exploring the piece itself and its place within this artist's astounding and singular oeuvre....

Anish Kapoor: Marsyas

Hardcover, 128 pages

Publication Date: 2003-05-01

Reviews :

Anish Kapoor is one of the world's most renowned and influential sculptors. Born in Bombay, he has lived and worked in London since the early 1970s. His output ranges from works on a human scale, including powdered pigment sculptures and convex mirrors, to massive installations, both inside buildings and in the landscape.

Taking on the challenge of the cavernous space of the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern in London, Kapoor created his largest sculpture ever: built of PVC membrane, stetched taut across massive steel hoops and hovering in mid-air, the sculpture dominates the space in a way no other artist has attempted. The creative process behind this ambitious project is documented here in specially commissioned photographs, drawings, and maquettes, and further explored in conversations with Kapoor. This is a fascinating look at what goes into a large-scale installation--from concept to realization--by one of today's leading artists....
